This is a very traditional nesting doll 7-pieces set made in USSR in 1990s. The doll is nicely hand painted all around in Sergiev Posad, USSR by Russian artist; floral design in vivid colors. Size 7'', set of 7 dolls. Russian Island is selling ONLY Russian made dolls!!! No cheap copies, all the dolls are authentic!!! In Russia making wooden objects which fit each inside other has many Centuries tradition. Gradually these figurines became to be carved in the shape of dolls. These dolls were made and painted by Russian craftsmen. This fabulous Russian doll was given the name MATRIOSHKA [matryoshka, matreshka] which originated from root of the word maternity. It became a symbol of FERTILITY and PERPETUATION. It is a good luck present for a very long time. Excellent vintage condition but it might have very small imperfections (see picture).
